Tashelhit (also spelled Tachelhit) is a variety of the Shilha language, which is a dialect of Berber (or Amazigh) languages spoken primarily in southwestern Morocco. It is one of the major Berber languages, alongside Tarifit (spoken in the north) and Kabyle (spoken in Algeria). Tashelhit is widely spoken by the Berber population in regions such as the Souss-Massa, Anti-Atlas, and parts of the High Atlas mountains.
In addition to being a spoken language, Tashelhit is an important part of the cultural and social identity of the Berber people in the region. It has its own alphabet (Tifinagh), although the Latin script is also commonly used in writing.
